Mountain Holidays in France

Most people who are looking for a holiday in the mountains of France head to the French Alps, with the honeypot destination being Chamonix Mont Blanc. Everybody has heard of Chamonix and it's no surprise therefore that this town in the French Alps is a busy, bustling and expensive mountain holiday destination.

However, if you prefer a quieter and much better value holiday in the mountains, our suggestion is to head for the less populated but no less beautiful mountain ranges such as the Pyrenees mountains of SW France. The Pyrenees are easily accessible thanks to Toulouse airport (regular connections from Paris) and also Tarbes/Lourdes and Pau airports. On a holiday in these French mountains you'll discover a rich mountain culture, unique wildlife, spectacular flora and of course a wide range of mountain sports.

For a lower level mountain holiday in France, the Vosges mountains of NE France are an often overlooked mountain holiday destination. The Vosges are located in the Alsac

Alsace/Lorraine

The Vosges mountain range in the Alsace region of NE France is a low level range close to the border with Germany. Stretching north to south, west of Strasbourg, the Vosges is a gently rolling mountain range and a great choice for a mountain holiday in France if you prefer your hiking less challenging. Rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and trail running in summer, downhill and cross country skiing in winter, the Vosges has a great choice of sports for the lover of the outdoors.

Your choice of destination for your mountain holiday in France will depend on the experience that you are seeking. If your aim is to hike the highest mountain peak in France, Mont Blanc, then the French Alps will be your choice. But the trade off with this mountain holiday destination is the crowds that you must expect.

For an altogether more peaceful but no less beautiful mountain holiday in France, head for the lesser known and altogether wilder mountain ranges such as the Pyrenees, the Vosges or the Auvergne. On a mountain holiday in these areas you are more likely to see stunning wildlife and be able to afford that beer at the end of your hike in the mountains!
