We’ve got several snippets of travel information for you if you are travelling to or considering travelling to France. We’ll get the bad news out of the way first!

A nationwide strike in protest of pension reforms will heavily disrupt France’s transport systems from Monday evening 6 September through Wednesday morning 8 September. In particular, the industrial action by workers at the ports of Caen and Cherbourg is affecting Brittany Ferries sailings from Portsmouth scheduled for today 6th September and tomorrow 7th September. Please contact Brittany Ferries to see whether your sailing is affected.

For those travelling by train, this web page has some very useful information as to the state of the network in France and into France. Be sure to check it out if rail travel is on your agenda

On a brighter note, Flybe have announced early summer 2011 flights from Southampton to Bergerac, Nice, and Rennes, as well as a service between London Gatwick and Nantes. Flights start from £26.99 one way including taxes and charges for early summer travel between March 27 and June 30, 2011.

Those of you who live in Ireland will be interested to hear that Irish Ferries has cut 40 per cent off fares to France with a late summer offer that sees fares start at €99 each way for a car plus two passengers with each additional passenger travelling from €30 each way. Sailing from Rosslare to Cherbourg and Roscoff on the ferry Oscar Wilde, the fare includes the provision of two reclining seats with cabin accommodation available for a small supplement. Bookings must be made before September 15, 2010 for travel before December 31, 2010 either online at Irish Ferries or call 0818 300 400.

Free flights from Flybe

We have been somewhat quiet on the ‘News’ front for the past month for which I do apologise, but the website has been incredibly busy. However, this News is too interesting to pass by and I am sure you will appreciate it! Flybe are currently offering a free voucher for two people to fly anywhere on the carrier’s network, for customers who apply for its Mastercard credit card before the end of June. All you will pay are taxes and charges.

Savings on the P&O Dover-Calais ferry crossing

As part of “National Ferry Fortnight”, an initiative set up by the Passenger Shipping Association, if you book your ferry crossing with P&O Ferries before Sunday 22nd May 2010, you’ll receive their National Ferry Fortnight discounted rates. In practical terms, if you travel from Dover to Calais with a car and up to 9 passengers from £30, each way, you’ll receive a 20% discount. But hurry, “offer must end soon”!

The bonus is that evening meals are available here and people travelling with their laptops will have free WiFi internet access. The gites can both be let by the night. New cheap flights to France from the UK

The new Aéroport de Brive-Vallée de la Dordogne in South West France is scheduled to open on 15 June. This is great news for people living in the London area of the UK, as City Jet will be starting a three times a week service (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) from London City airport to Brive on the 25th June with one-way tickets starting from €59. It’s well worth looking at City Jet’s deals as they are surprisingly competitive with no hidden fees and charges.You can take up to 23kgs checked in hold luggage free of charge and there are no fees for paying with a credit charge.

City jet will also operate four flights a week to Deauville on the North Coast of Normandy from June 24 until September 27, 2010 with one-way tickets starting from £59, including all taxes.

New Ryan Air cheap flights to France from the North of England

If you live in the North of England, then the good news is that Ryan Air have just opened a base at Leeds-Bradford airport. From the end of March, they will be offering cheap flights to Carcassonne in the SW of France, Limoges in central France, Montpellier on the south coast of France and Nantes in NW France. The other good news is that they are offering a million £5 seats for travel across its European network in late April and May, but be quick, as these flights have to be booked before midnight on Monday, March 29!

I stayed at this bed and breakfast accommodation recently and just had to get them on our books! The reasons are many-fold but here we go - a) they accept dogs b) they have reliable free WiFi internet access c) they are perfectly placed for a north/south journey stopover, just 10 minutes from exit 3 of the A71 autoroute, 50kms south of Orleans d) there are several excellent little restaurants in the village e) the rooms are full of charm and character f) the accommodation is excellent value for money and last but not least g) René and Thierry are just superb hosts! This address is not only an ideal stopover, but also an excellent base for visiting the chateaux of the eastern Loire Valley such as Blois and Chambord which are under an hour’s drive away.
